Hi, I'm the maintainer of the package in Debian.

Are you saying that you installed this binary from SID in an Etch distro
without recompiling it? If your answer is yes, then I know why it's
failing... You should have backported the package instead (which works
perfectly, we have more than 150 Etch servers running this package).
