DNS round robin, proxying, and a dead server

I think I'm right in saying this.

if we have multiple responses for a given DNS lookup, we will try each 
response until we get a connection.

is this a correct assumption?? it looks like it is doing this in the 
code, or is this trickery just to try a v4/v6 thing?
