compile error 64bit

Greetings, I am unable to compile mod_ruby 1.2.5 on a RedHat ES 4 64bit machine it gives me: ./configure.rb --with-apxs=/usr/sbin/apxs make .... gcc -shared -L/lib64 -L'/usr/lib64' -Wl,-R'/usr/lib64' -o mod_ruby.so mod_ruby.o ruby_config.o apachelib.o array_header.o table.o connection.o server.o request.o upload.o cookie.o paramtable.o multival.o bucket.o apache_request.o apache_multipart_buffer.o apache_cookie.o -lruby-static -ldl -lcrypt -lm /usr/bin/ld: /usr/local/lib/libruby-static.a(array.o): relocation R_X86_64_32 against `a local symbol' can not be used when making a shared object; recompile with -fPIC /usr/local/lib/libruby-static.a: could not read symbols: Bad value collect2: ld returned 1 exit status make: *** [mod_ruby.so] Error 1 Any input as to the why of this error would be appreciated.
