Ok, it's a bug. You can easily fix this though. In Survey/Display.pm, on line 809 or thereabouts, is a list of components that shouldn't result in a component space. You can add "TIMER" in this list. (Seems more tags, such as "DATETIME" are missing too). The rectangles are intended in the formal theme.
