Ok, it's a bug. You can easily fix this though.

In Survey/Display.pm, on line 809 or thereabouts, is a list of components 
that shouldn't result in a component space. You can add "TIMER" in this 
list. (Seems more tags, such as "DATETIME" are missing too).

The rectangles are intended in the formal theme. If you don't want them, 
you can change the "componentspc" class in the stylesheet to not have a 
border and/or to be 0px high.
