The modsurvey machine is back up again, although for how long I don't 
know. At least everything works right now.

Support says:

I unplugged all cables again and tested to start it up.
It seems to come up now.
I got link on the network card, which I did not before

Test and see if you can reach the box.

Which means:

*whew* :-)

As far as I can see, everything works. I get no notifications about 
hardware errors in the logs. Linux usually is good at whining about such 
things.

For now I intend to cover my ears with my hands and say "baa baa baa!" and 
pretend as if nothing has happened. :-)

This is good, cause I really couldn't afford to buy new hardware right 
now. I'll be even more careful with backups now at least, although still 
hoping the machine will survive for the foreseeable fututre.
