this error is probably due to my linux inexperience.

I'm using the httpd-2.0.40-21.9 rpm (not source)
mod_perl-1.99_07 is from perl -MCPAN -eshell 'install mod_perl'

I tried #1 and recieved a similar error:

failed to resolve handler `ModPerl::AuthAny'

I cannot try #2 because I cannot locate the startup script.

Any info on versions of apache and mod_perl (source or rpm)
known to work in this regard would be helpful.

When work gets around to replacing my old redhat server I'll be using 
debian which should prove a bit easier.

Thanks Joel, you put so much work into writing good code that I'd hate
to waste it in setting up a redhat box just for this.

As Michael says, there are ways around it.
