wackamole newbie - Solaris 8: snprintf broken

I tried to go through all the threads  and find documentation...Can anyone please help? I have a 'snprintf is broken' problem when I do a configure. Also, I'm not clear on setting up the virtual IP for failover - do I first do these steps (?):

ifconfig hme0:1 plumb (on both machines?)
ifconfig hme0:1 xxx.xxx.xxx.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 (on both machines?)
ifconfig hme0:1 up ( on only one machine?)
