It's been a long time since I hacked on them, but I expect blame still
mostly blames me.

amstatus has been in Perl since up-do's and track-suits were in fashion,
whereas amreport was rewritten in Perl during my time at Zmanda.  If I
recall correctly, amstatus was full of mysteriousness, so I delayed working
on it in preference to converting other things to Perl.

So basically, no good reason except lack of developer attention.
