So to follow up, it does appear that the next few tapes in the series somehow lost their labels, but I can't blame this on Amanda. I really have no idea how it could have happened. It seems completely coincidental that the first tape to have lost its label was first one to be loaded after the machine was down for a few days. The tapes were just sitting in the library, which was powered up but not doing much of anything without the machine to which it is connected. So as far as I can tell it's just a rather bizarre set of coincidences, though there is still an amanda bug here: slot 20:amcheck-device: TypeError in method 'storage_getconf', argument 1 of type 'storage_t *' at /usr/lib64/amanda/amcheck-device line 165. I guess this will fire any time it sees a tape that has something on it but where the first file isn't a label (or maybe a label containing zeroes). I haven't been successful in figuring out just what is on those tapes; I can get several files off of them but those files all appear to be full of zeroes. I do regularly test my backups but certainly not every file on every tape, so I'm not sure what's going on here. I think amanda itself prefixes everything it writes with a 32K header that contains some sort of instructions and I'm not seeing that, so... I don't know. Certainly I'm going to have to step up my backup verification. I wonder what others do for this. - J<
