Oh, it is reproducable.  I am now backing up the machine with a simple Tcl 
script that implements a Tower of Hanoi sequence.  If I had some way to debug 
it (or any advise on how to do that), I'd be willing to help.  Sendbackup, 
when run interactively (-t option) works just fine.  It seems that when run 
from amandad things go bad.
