Oh also check that the relevant executables have SGID bit set and correct users (user root, group amanda). Mine is under /usr/lib/amanda/application/amgtar but probably different location for you.
I have SGID set for amgtar ambsdtar amstar in that directory.
In /usr/lib/amanda/application/ the following has SGID to root set: ambind calcsize killpgrp rundump runtar.
