This is a WAG - newer LTO formats support accessing the tape as a 
filesystem <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linear_Tape_File_System>.

I wonder if the OS (linux?) sees the tape drive as a disk? What does 
the kernel log during device attachment? Are you able to hook up the 
drive to a different OS for comparison?
