RE: Info-ZIP maintainer

Cosmin,

If you can get that put together either yourself, or get the patches to me,
I think I can get them integrated next week, and get it tested under Windows
at least.

If you integrate it yourself, please let me know what changes you made, and
what they are supposed to affect.

I do have a bunch of old mail that I will go through and see if there are
any patches in there - or other potential issues. As I recall, there were a
couple of issues that really weren't patches, but required actual fixes -
i.e. problems given, but no solutions. I have no idea if Christian has done
those fixes, or if anyone has even looked at them.

Greg might have these someplace if I don't have them in my mail.

As for delaying the release until the summer, from my viewpoint, I would
suggest that getting this release out as soon as possible would be the
better position, because it has been quite awhile since this has been
released.

If, however, we can get Ed's large file support etc., into unzip that would
be a major reason to delay the release. That way we could release a combined
package at roughly the same time (in fact preferably the same time). Having
a portion of our code that would handle large file sizes (i.e. create them),
but not be able to unzip them would be a major oops as far as I can tell.

Realistically, I am not willing to release another version of WiZ that has
the capability to zip large files, deal with 64 bits and so on when zipping,
but is not able to deal with it when unzipping. I think that Info-ZIP would
see a rather large amount of complaints, and a fast drop-off in usage.

Of course this is just my opinion, for what it is worth.

I think Mike has a good idea. I sent a couple of unz551c patches to
Christian some time ago, and I can send to Mike those ones to which
Christian replied with "accepted".

Or better yet, I could prepare an unz551d archive myself, because
making a selection of the accepted patches and sending them to Mike,
or integrating them myself, should take just as much effort.

Christian, did anyone else submit patches to unz551c? If yes, could
you please send them to me, or to Mike? I think I can make an unz551d
bundle this weekend. And, given that I am using unz551c on a regular
basis, without encountering problems so far, maybe we could consider
unz551d a release candidate.

I wonder if you plan to delay the release of unzip 5.51 until this
summer, when the LZW patent expires worldwide and USE_UNSHRINK can
be enabled by default.
