Thanks Jörg,

 From 'man star'

"In case that nofiles are renamed from excluded
      parts to included parts,
partial backups may be taken also."

This is true. The cache files I want to exclude will never be copied.

     "Partial backups only make
sense if a complete directory sub tree is excluded (e.g. by
using the pat= option) or if a partial backup starts at a
sub directory that is not the root directory of the file
      system."

This is also true....

However I cannot take a 0F and then a 3P. the 3P references [<3]P and not [<3]F
also, which is what i would desire...

So should I use my exclude pattern on ALL levels? and run every dump I do as a
partial dump....

Is there any danger in doing this as the only backup scheme for a filesystem?

Thanks very much.
