Making a script that runs on *all* systems is virtually impossible.
That's why I offered to port the script to whichever shell/system you
prefer.

Well, the "A" is the point of the whole exercise: As you can read in the
subject line of the emails in this thread, I want to extract a single
directory from a dump, not the entire dump.  But maybe I'm using the
wrong syntax.
