It is simple: - You did use -restore, so you did like to _completely_ extract the current level 0 dump in a way that allows to extract a higher level dump later. - If you liked to extract just a single file or a sub tree, you are _definitely_ not in "restore" mode. Use the conventional "tar" cli in this case.
