Do you like to have scripts that are Suse only?

It would make more sense to use a portable mt program like the
one that comes with the star source. This mt program even supports
remote tape operation as star does.

This is not a solution

Portable scripts should not use more then garanteed by posix:

date [-u] [+format]

because it does not archive enough meta data. Star -dump or
star level=0 does.

Depends on what you expect from a "backup".

If you like to be able to restore the old FS as correct as possible,
you need -dump or level=0
