no space left on device,. Error writing.

Star-users,

I was having the problem with a tape drive quitting on
a multivolume backup about a month ago.  I posted it
to the list and the general consensus was that there
was a problem with some later kernels.   

I switched to Centos 4.3 (repackaged redhat) running
2.6.9-34.0.1.ELsmp .  I am using a DAT 20/40 tape
drive and trying to use DAT 12/24 (DDS-3) tapes in it.


I have issued the following commands.  Each time the
tape writes to the end of the tape and give me the
error below (or something close to the error below).  

star cv multivol f=/dev/st0 /mnt/files/
star cv multivol tsize=11800M f=/dev/st0 /mnt/files/
star cv multivol tsize=12000M f=/dev/st0 /mnt/files/


star: No space left on device. Error writing
'/dev/st0'.
star: 1021370 blocks + 0 bytes (total of 10458828800
bytes = 10213700.00k).
star: The following problems occurred during archive
processing:
star: Cannot: stat 1, open 0, read/write 0. Size
changed 0.
star: Missing links 0, Name too long 0, File too big
0, Not dumped 0.

I'm sure I am doing something stupid, but I don't know
what.  my guess is that I have to tell star that I am
not using DDS-4 tapes in the drive.  I thought the
tsize= parameter would do that, but it's not working. 
Perhaps I am doing something wrong????
