Tape is written with:

/bin/star VOLHDR="hrst-ux4.hrst.in.aoc:20070216-01:30"  -c -v -sparse
artype=exustar -acl -xattr -fifo bs=1M fs=144m -time -fifostats
f=/dev/st0 ./home/hrst ...

Restore is done with:
star xfv /dev/st0 -fifo bs=1M fs=144m -acl -pattern="${files}"

I did not use "artype=exustar" with the restore. Is that perhaps the
problem? I can't check this because customer has changed tapes.
