This in fact prevents star from creating an unrecognizable archive. However, 
it does not help for the restore.

Trying to restore level 4:

star: WARNING: Archive is 'bzip2' compressed, trying to use the -bz option.
Volhdr: level 4 of /fs/main/mount
star: Invalid or empty dump, will not oerwrite 'star-symtable'
star: 1 blocks + 0 bytes (total of 10240 bytes = 10.00k).

Trying to restore level 5:

star: WARNING: Archive is 'bzip2' compressed, trying to use the -bz option.
Volhdr: level 5 of /fs/main/mount
Validating this dump against restored filesystem...
star: Wrong reflevel 4, last restored dump level was 3.
star: Restore a level 4 (or higher) dump.
