XATTR option does NOT work for chattr attributes

Looking at Berlios ftp site, my version seems pretty much up-to-date. 1.5a85
seems to be latest version (in the beta section??) so I downloaded it,
unzipped and attempted a "make" on my CentOS 5.0 server....but no joy!!! 

I had a quick look at READMEs etc but I am completely lost.
I am not a linux programmer so only have experience of doing simple makes.

It seems to me that there is a distinct orientation towards Sun/Solaris.
Apart from a few negative comments about GNU Make, concrete information on
creating Star binaries from source seems to be badly lacking for Linux, yet
we know it has been done since Linux packages are available, albeit for
older versions.

Can somebody please point me to a "fool's guide to creating up-do-date star
binaries from source for Linux"
