I think you've just cleared up some major confusion on my part.
Unfortunately, what I refer to as "chattr" attributes are frequently called
"extended attributes"...hence the misleading subject line above. So this has
absolutely nothing to do with EAs/XATTRs, right?

My problem is that star does not preserve "chattr" attributes during a
copy/backup/restore (forget about XATTRs, they work fine). But now I
understand that "chattr" attributes are a whole different ball-game and this
feature is not yet implemented by star.

I'll just have to forget about using the immutable flags...that is if I want
them preserved during backups and restores. Pity!

But I do need star for XATTR support, so thanks again for a great utility
and sorry for the wild goose chase.
