it needs to be clarified that, although it is undeniably a total mess,
"themeing" in ardour is more complex than is being acknowledged. why?
because there are at least two different "kinds" of "themeing" going on.

   - colors defined via  GTK rc file, which apply to regular and custom GTK
widgets
   - colors defined via an ardour-specific configuration file, which apply
to things drawn on the canvas, or elsewhere in ardour

you cannot predict by looking at the GUI which of these two mechanisms is
involved. it may even involve both of them.

the theme editor really only provides control over the second category,
although obviously it allows you to switch between rc files as well (but
not to change their contents)
