Note, there are different kinds of left-right processing available. For
a stereo track we most of the times should avoid to use the term
"panning". Actually for most, if not all mixers (as well as DAWs) and
always for hifi amps, the default is not panning, but "balance". Maybe
after "balancing" increasing or decreasing the volume is required.

That was the most important answer ;). Actually there are several ways
to do left-right processing, even in an artificial way.
