The steps described in the Ardour manual are for what you would generally
think of as soundtrack editing, you need a copy of the video for time
alignment, but the video does not have to be full resolution or highest
quality.

It sounds like what you want is something more like a video installation
playback or something similar.

Assuming that just using VLC or some similar playback only application
does not suit your needs,
you can use xjadeo and Ardour together without following the manual steps
for importing video into the Ardour timeline.  Just load the audio you
want into  Ardour, set the Ardour synchronization to follow jack transport
and set xjadeo to follow jack transport, then use a jack control
application to start the jack transport running, and both ardour and
xjadeo should follow.

Yes, but it sounds like what you want is not the typical import to
timeline work flow, you want xjadeo to play back full resolution video, so
you will need to use the alternate method I mentioned above.
