Ardour supports VST2 of the same architecture as Ardour:
32bit Ardour can load 32bit VSTs only, and 64bit Ardour only 64bit VSTs
(See Menu > Help > About for the Ardour version that you have installed).

Usually Ardour scans for VST plugins at application start in common
locations.

Preferences > Plugins > VST  allows to configure custom paths where VSTs
might be installed, and Preferences > Plugins allows to start a manual
discovery.

To load plugins, double-click (or right-click) in the "processor box",
in the mixer window.

PS. At this point in time Ardour does not yet support VST3 plugins.
