 Dear Paul,

I have now in /etc/systemd/system.conf added an

     DefaultTasksMax=4096

For some reason even 1024 wasn't enough. Now ardour works again fine
(both the git master and the release).

And no: I have no idea why this limit has to be set to such high a value
for me. Lat's hope that this is a pecularity debian will fix before
Ubuntu releases it.
