Hi,

 just for the record: I sort of fixed the problem by replacing the
original cursors in /usr/share/ardour7/icons (on linux) with enlarged
versions.

If you're interested you can download the enlarged icons here:

icons-medium is 200% and icons-large is 300% of the original size
(icons-standard are the original icons). Unfortunately the hot spot of
the cursors is a bit offset, but it's no big deal and completely
workable.
