codecs and boom

1 Audacity offers me two ways of recording - Realtek and USB. Only Realtek works; USB gives nothing. 2 In recording with Realtek there is a distinct difference at A3. At A3 and below there is a 'bathroom boom'. Above A3 all is well. Why is this?
