Sure, you 'could' use Audacity as an audio player, just as you 'could' use
a food processor to stir your cup of tea / coffee, but it lacks much of the
convenience of using the right tool for the job.

Audacity is primarily designed to be an audio recorder / multi-track audio
editor, not a music player. As such, it lacks some conveniences found in
many audio players (support for play lists, search by tag, music library
management, random play, play streaming audio, burn to CD, WiFi sync, DRM
support, Replay Gain, tagging favourite tracks ...), and has several
inconveniences (asking if you want to save, always decoding compressed
files on import, automatically converting to 32-bit float on import, ...).

If you're a lover of free software, then Mac is arguably the worst choice
of operating system. Nevertheless there are some good, zero cost music
players available.
iTunes can handle most formats, though I hear it does not support DSD
without a paid add-on. I don't use any of these (I primarily use Linux),
but some that you could look at include: Pine Player, Fostex Audio Player,
Vox Music Player, ...

One media player that I do use (as it is cross-platform and plays just
about anything), is VLC media player (https://www.videolan.org).
