You compiled it in, but it's not active because the ATAPI interface takes precedence. Either disable the ATAPI cdrom interface, or add append=" hdc=ide-scsi" (assuming the real device name of the ide cdrom is hdc; /dev/cdrom is a link) to your boot loader's boot-time command line.
