If you have libcdio installed, perhaps run

cd-info -d 3 *name-of-device* 

and see if that. You should see something like this (among other things)...

Disc mode is listed as: CD-DA
CD-ROM Track List (1 - 22)
  #: MSF       LSN    Type   Green? Copy? Channels Premphasis?
  1: 00:02:01  000001 audio  true   yes   2        no
