Also,

root@transponder:/home/garydale# mkfs -t ext2 /dev/sr0
mke2fs 1.42.4 (12-Jun-2012)
/dev/sr0 is entire device, not just one partition!
Proceed anyway? (y,n) y
/dev/sr0: Read-only file system while setting up superblock
