It looks as if the intended size of the track is already known to the media. A plausible explanation would be that a previous burn run of the same image converted the media into a closed DVD-R with the same size as the image. chi kwan: could you please run dvd+rw-mediainfo /dev/... on the media which refused to get burned, so we get more clarity about its state ?
