Once again, it seems xorriso is to the rescue:

$ xorriso -dev /dev/sr1 -blank "deformat"
xorriso 0.4.8 : RockRidge filesystem manipulator, libburnia project.

xorriso : NOTE : Loading ISO image tree from LBA 0
xorriso : UPDATE : 55 nodes read in 1 seconds
Drive current: -dev '/dev/sr1'
Media current: BD-RE
Media status : is written , is appendable
Media summary: 1 session, 12075457 data blocks, 23.0g data, 25.1m free
Volume id : 'Documentaries + The Prisoner'
Beginning to blank media in mode 'deformat'.
[..about 15 seconds passes..]
Blanking done
xorriso : NOTE : Re-aquiring -outdev '/dev/sr1'
xorriso : UPDATE : Thank you for being patient for 1 seconds
Drive current: -dev '/dev/sr1'
Media current: BD-RE
Media status : is blank
Media summary: 0 sessions, 0 data blocks, 0 data, 23.1g free
Volume id : 'ISOIMAGE'

Does such a short blanking time seem to be correct? It takes much
longer to fully blank even a CD-RW disc, for example.
