I think that's the point with Emacs. Most people will be put off simply by 
staring at the screen and trying to figure out what's this.

Even Csound people seem to find Emacs complicated to use :) So maybe you 
should not go that way.

Still, if you do dig further, you will find that it is just incredibly 
powerful, mainly in the sense that it makes it possible to have your work 
evolve smoothly in any direction you want. If you have very clear and 
definite ideas of what you want to create (both music and software wise), 
you might very well be better off with another system. If, like me, you 
discover your path while walking, then Emacs is a great tool, along with 
things like Squeak for example.

Now about SES limitations: if you ever decide to go Emacs, then there will 
not be limitations any more. You can implement or modify anything you want: 
just look at the code and extend it.

The one thing that is always difficult to improve is speed. So it is better 
to let dedicated external apps handle heavy computations (for example I do 
all MIDI manipulation with Keykit, driven from Emacs)

BTW, I have started implementing table edition in Csound-X... as usual I 
have been amazed to see how easy it was :) Screenshot here:
