I thought it was what hell referred to...  I had the same problem when I
installed RH on my mom's computer and couldn't get pysol installed
automagically but had to hunt down the packages and stuff.  I couldn't
believe my eyes (after having used debian's apt and Mdk's urpmi which do
pull out missing dependencies automatically).

I don't know gentoo but I used debian for a long time.  Now I'm on
Mandrake9.1 and I found Mdk somewhere in between debian and RedHat.

Mdk is easy to get started with, the installer is great and the urpmi
package manager will check dependencies of whatever you want to install
and install them for you.  You can of course specify several sources of
packages.  A lot configurations can be done via a user-friendly
interface.  It was a relief after having rode Debian. However, I do end
up compiling stuff by myself and configure by hand and sometimes I
wonder why the hell did I switch from Debian.

Apparently Planet CCRMA's RH packages are really well maintained so it
(RH) may be a good choice if all you need is what Planet offers.

I've seen too many people complaining about SuSe so I guess that's not
recommended.
