I've read alot about "source" based distributions and all they have to offer. They are extremely veritile. But there is a bit of a learning curve. I like the best of both worlds - ease of installation and ease of maintainance. Gentoo gives both. They are currently working on a project for generating Live CDs that boot and run off the CD called "catalyst". http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/releng/ What I would recommend is to read the installation procedure on the gentoo web page: http://www.gentoo.org This way you will get a good idea of how it's done as well as if you want to pursue it. I like it because I can install it on a currently running distribution (what ever it is). This way you can build your two setups on the same machine. Really, you could do a single installation with different startup options. You can boot the light version when you need it and then boot to the GUI version when you need it. Most distributions work that way but they are limited to the /bin/init numbers. Gentoo's boot options are named. It still uses /bin/init numbers but the main program /sbin/rc gets passed the "named" startup. So in your setup you could have "default" which is the normal startup the GUI startup and "light" as your light weight version. You can switch without having to reboot either. As root you just run: /sbin/rc default or /sbin/rc light And it will stop all process not in the boot option selected and start processes not currently running. This way you only really have to build one linux installation to handle both. The LiveCD could also be configured this way.
