There is also SuperCollider, which is a really nice language, but has far fewer sound generators. And as you've been doing computer science, you may want to investigate the Perry Cook Synthesis Toolkit, something I've been meaning to get arount to. However, personally I'd suggest holding off on SuperCollider or other text languages till we see how Csound 5 turns out. In the meantime it can't hurt to learn PD or Max/MSP ( if you're on Mac ) or jMax. ( All are similar in style.) Problem is you'll need either some sort of network protocal or midi card for each and a sound card for each that is half decent. If they don't already have these, that may drive the cost up enough that you'd be better off with just a couple of faster machines. Glyn and I did a fair bit using two machines and that worked fairly well, but the latency on the stock sound card on the laptop was so much worse than on the clunky desktop with a proper soundcard. So I think the answer would depend on how much gear you can scrounge up free or dirt cheap! The other issue is how you want the machines to talk to each other. If they are linux machines I think it *should* ( corrections? ) be possible to get them controlling each other with score events via pipes thus bypassing midi. How one would do this over a network protocal instead of midi, I don't know, but I'd sure like hear any stories.
