hi community! i have 2 issues:
* [bad] bad old csound compilation problem, and
* [good] openair linux announce.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
* bad old csound compilation problem *
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
i spent last couple of days trying to compile csound from
sourceforge a.k.a. canonical sources (4.23f11gbs.0 and cvs) for
linux without any sort of gui, i.e. without x and fltk.
needless to say that i was unsuccessful if i'm writing this ;(
configure options i used were:
./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-rtaudio \
--disable-windows --without-fltk --without-x \
--disable-maintainer-mode --disable-cygwin
everything goes fine until the linking stage that ends up with
a bunch of error messages about "undefined reference to
`POLL_EVENTS'". after some gooooogling around this problem i
figured out that it is pretty old, and seems like this happens
because some stuff in resulting binaries is dependent on gui
stuff even if latter is disabled through configuration.
i don't speak C/C++ and don't understand much about Makefiles,
so after some fooling around commenting out references to
fltk/x stuff here and there i gave up :(
i'd like to know:
0) any fixes?
1) anybody of you developers going to fix this?
i have lots of fun about all that global strategical issues
like scons-development-system-vs-gnu-development-system too,
but i'd like things happen to work as expected, and there are
quite a lot of people just like me among us, right?
i have strong reasons to bother about this due to the project
i'm working on. but here we are going into another issue:
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
* openair linux announce *
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
for those of us who wants to use csound for live performance
and is not satisfied with regular linux distributions. i'm
working on linux-from-scratch-fashioned project that i called
openair linux because it had to have a nice name. it is a howto
about building extremely lightweight, fast and simplified
no-gui linux system designed for live performance with csound
and nothing else. seems like initial public release will happen
in a couple of weeks.
(for those who don't know why build it from scratch: because it
is the only reasonable way to obtain a system optimized exactly
for your hardware and running as fast as it can. and that's not
as horrible as it sounds.)
for this moment the only flavor of csound that i successfully
compiled (and used) for my openair system is varga's 4.24.1 :-P
(i still have not experimented with csound5). naturally, i'd
like to include canonical csound in the project, but look at
previous issue. so
DEVELOPERS WHO CAN'T STAY INDIFFERENT TO NO-GUI-USERS' SUFFERING
INVITED TO COLLABORATE !!
i think it would be good to have the fixes as a patches to
source tree (until they happen in source tree itself, i hope),
available for download from openair's (and other) website(s).
that's all for today.
