Documentation, what to use?

Hi all, I want to start documenting my score editing tools so I can 
actually release at least some alpha stage stuff. Wondering what is the 
best format. I know NOTHING about the various doc formats, but I like 
stuff to be cross-platform, easy to read through, easy to search and 
free/open-source. Any suggestions as to what to use, or where to find 
good comparisons, tutorials, etc?
