realtime arpeggio instrument

Hi

I warming up to do a realtime arpeggio instrument, pref. with the 
following features:

1) Whatever notes are held will be part of the arpeggio, but for 
instance in two or three octaves.
2) If I tap the tempo (ie on the lowest C on my keyboard) the arpeggio 
will sync it's tempo to the tap'ed tempo
3) I'd like to keep everything in on single instrument

Does anyone have ideas, suggestions or code that will get me going in 
the right direction?
