Kodi/XBMC is the first thing that comes to mind. Disclaimer: I know there's an Android app for it, but I've never used that.

Hope I didn’t alienate anyone with my previous post, because now I have a question related to the original post ☺

I’m looking for a device or system something similar to the original poster, but with these specifics:

1- fairly open source- I want to be able to stream and play ‘whatever’ without having my files get ‘imported’ or transcoded, or whatever- I’d like to be able to just point at a file or a stream and have it work, and I don’t want it to do anything with my files other than read them and then play them.

2- flexible/nice remote user interface- specifically, it would be nice if there were an app for it, so that I can be sitting on the couch, and browse for streams and files on my iPad or droid or whatever.
