Regarding my ‘alienate’ comment, I just don’t want to be rude to anyone- that’s not beneficial to anyone, including me ☺
Just took a quick look at daphile- very interesting.
Do you use this Fred? It looks great- I think I have a new project ☺
One question that I don’t see an obvious answer for: can I set up a headless device for remote playback? Can the Daphile server stream _to_ another device that then plays back the file, and can Daphile keep track of those devices for management. Like if had some piece of hardware in each room of the house, and I could configure them correctly, could the server keep track of them, and show them to me in an interface, and let me just select ‘source’ and ‘destination’?

Don’t worry about alienating anyone on here. If we all agreed on everything, it would be a boring place indeed.
May I suggest daphile? I use it with an external DAC directly feeding an Adcom GFA-555 power amp. You can operate it directly or through an app on your iPad, iPhone, or (I assume) Android device.

I’m looking for a device or system something similar to the original poster, but with these specifics:
1- fairly open source- I want to be able to stream and play ‘whatever’ without having my files get ‘imported’ or transcoded, or whatever- I’d like to be able to just point at a file or a stream and have it work, and I don’t want it to do anything with my files other than read them and then play them.
2- flexible/nice remote user interface- specifically, it would be nice if there were an app for it, so that I can be sitting on the couch, and browse for streams and files on my iPad or droid or whatever.

That’s simply untrue of the modern iPhones. Here’s a very good, instrumented review of the iPhone 5:

"Confirming what I hear with critical listening, the iPhone 5 is a wonderful high-fidelity audio source. While publications funded mostly by advertisements from makers of expensive cables, power conditioners and outboard DACs don't want you to know this, the iPhone 5 is a better audio source than most DACs will be when connected to a computer or CD transport. The only difference is that the iPhone has a level 6 dB lower than a proper CD player, but the iPhone still has more output at 1 V full-scale than some outboard audiophile DACs!

head-fi.org<http://head-fi.org/> and whathifi.com<http://whathifi.com/> are filled with “subjective” reviews authored by people standing in a circle trying to impress one another with their “refined taste” and “superb listening skills.” If you secretly put an iPhone 6 inside of a case with a 1/4” thick milled front panel sporting a pretentious sounding name in cursive script and a $1700 price tag, many of the same “reviewers" who panned the iPhone 6 would be telling you how wonderful this “new” audiophile DAC sounds. That’s because they are like so many of the “wine connoisseurs” with “refined palates” who praise $7 wines from grocery stores when they do blind tastings but call those same wines undrinkable dreck when they watch them poured from the labeled bottles before tasting them.
Sorry for the rant, but I’ve been into high-end audio since the 1980s and it’s disgusting how it has devolved into something akin to “The Emperor’s New Clothes.”
