Coincidentally, I'm just finishing up (should be done this morning) my
project to rip all my SACDs (stereo and multichannel) using the Oppo and
sacd_extract. The DSD files can be played back on the Oppo via
attached/networked drives, though it's not a satisfactory option for
every album because the playback is not gapless. It's great for anything
with standard songs separated by silence, but it's unlistenable for
classical or The Dark Side of the Moon.
Stereo material can be played back gaplessly via Logitech Media Server
with the DSDPlayer plugin. Depending on the client player, the DSD is
converted to PCM at 44.1, 88.2, 176.4 or 192 kHz. The only method I know
of to deal with multichannel gaplessly is to use Foobar2000 with the
appropriate plugin, which also transcodes to 88.2 or 176.4.
Interestingly, a non-hybrid SACD is physically just a DVD. It's possible
to extract an SACD to an .ISO file, then burn that .ISO to a DVD-R or
DVD+R. Unfortunately, the number of players that will accept such a disc
are small. In the Oppo world, the player that can do the extraction
won't play an SACD-R, but the prior model which can't do the extraction
WILL play one. Not that that's confusing or anything…
Since an SACD is really just a DVD, you'd think that someone would have
figured out how to decrypt and extract the data in a computer drive by
now, but I've never heard even a hint of it happening. All the options I
know of are centered around a very few specific pieces of hardware. I
was very fortunate to decide to buy the Oppo right before it was taken
off the market in favor of their newer 4k model. If it dies, there goes
my ability to rip SACDs.
