Both great ideas, thanks guys. I already use ImgBurn, as it happens, and it's working just fine. Did a DVD restoration job a few days ago with it in fact: flawless.
 

 Same goes for the inbuilt write to CD functions, and for burning from a DAW (Presonus StudioOne) - no errors, no problems recognising discs, writing to or reading from discs. EAC itself even reads and backs up flawlessly, it's only the recognition of there being a writable disc in the drive that seems to be at fault.
 

 It's a real mystery..!
