It's the amplitude of the waveform. With 16-bit audio, each sample's
amplitude (distance from dead silence) can range from -32,768 to 32,768.
Think of a digital recording like a traditional line graph. The
beginning of the recording is zero on the x-axis, and the y-axis is the
volume. Digital recording simply places a dot (sample) at a particular
x,y coordinate every 1/44,100 of a second (in the case of CD audio).
That's all there is to it.
