If you're ripping a CD, you want the very same bits that were put in that CD. Exact Audio Copy tries to give you an *exact* *copy*, so the bits you get are determined by the CD you are ripping. If EAC did something else, it wouldn't be an exact copy. FLAC is an encoder. It happens to be a lossless encoder, like the zip encoder is for a computer file, so when you decode you can get back the exact bits that went in. The bits at the end of the process should allow you to reconstruct the original CD exactly.
