What do you consider “A properly-tagged FLAC file”?

There's one big, big point: Metadata. A properly-tagged FLAC file is wonderfully self-documenting.

While it's technically possible to tag a WAV, there are competing methods, none of which are guaranteed to work with any given player.

Also, “doesn't save much space” still saves more space than “doesn't save any space at all.” :)
