I have some of my music in digital format, but most is physical. I would like to copy as much as possible to digital for the ease of access, but I have never seemed to find a mechanism to properly do that and am curious how you handle yours.
From my perspective I would like to have:
· all my digital music stored in a director structure similar to the following, music collection\artist\album\format\track.
· additional tag(s) that can show various definable attributes (summer tune, 70’s, driving, etc.) which could be used to develop play lists
· a cataloging program that would track each album and allow me to indicate the media(s) I have for this album and where they are located (physical and digital). Data entry should be look up either by placing CD in drive and have it looked up or entering a title/artist type combination and having it looked up and data downloaded.
· a media player that can play based on pointing to the location of the files rather than absorbing the files into the player

Yes, I do as well, though primarily I use Foobar2000. I don't think Foobar is necessarily better, it's just what I started with so it's still easier for me.
I probably made things confusing when I referred to LMS “organizing”. In that context, I meant that it allows me to select artists or albums or tracks and send them to one or any combination of the several players I have around the house. Without proper tags, things won't group together properly. You'd have the same issue on any of various portable devices, too. Of course, if you only ever navigate a library via directories and files, tagging is far less important.

In some edge cases, even that doesn't work, for example https://www.discogs..com/Various-Zapped/master/175655 vs. https://www.discogs.com/Various-Zappéd/release/1150699 <https://www.discogs.com/Various-Zapp%C3%A9d/release/1150699> . I own and have digitized both versions and have them served up as “Zappéd [version one]” and “Zappéd [version two]”. Granted, that's really an outlier. (I know, there's no accent on the cover in the first version…but there is on the label.)

Here's literally everything anyone needs to know about Yahoo: It's now owned by V*r*z*n. I worked there for too many years and am overwhelmingly happy that I'm now retired. The place is a chaotic, sadistic mess.
